about
Welcome! My name is Rob Davidson and I had the pleasure of teaching the “Writing Spain: Travel Writing in Madrid” class to seven great students in June, 2015. This website is an E-Zine of student work, and part of the culminating project for the class. You'll find some interesting writing on a wide range of topics, from Spanish food, to the bullfights, to reflections on the city's streets and parks, the Spanish way of life, and more. A little taste of Madrid!
In this workshop-based class, students explored the genres of the travel journal, memoir, the personal essay, and literary journalism. We studied writing techniques and craft by reading each others' work and by studying the work of established authors. Experiential learning and the in-country experience was our special focus. We had our host city, Madrid, at our fingertips, and we explored it, and our reactions to it, in fine prose. Assigned readings included work from Colm Tóibín, John Hooper, Giles Tremlett, Mary Lee Settle, Michele Morano, and others. I am Professor of English at California State University, Chico. My most recent book is a collection of short stories, The Farther Shore (Bear Star Press, 2012). For more info on me, visit my website. The University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) has provided university students with quality study abroad programs for over 30 years, with programs all around the world. A quick shout out to the staff of USAC Madrid--Álvaro, Gabriela, and Susan--for helping to make our stay a wonderful experience. ¡Muchas gracias! Thanks for visiting. ¡Disfruta del trabajo de los estudiantes! --Rob Davidson This website was designed by Sophia Rogers-Davidson. Davidson photo by Linda Rogers. |
